Empowering Your Pregnancy Journey
Questions to Ask Your OBGYN or Midwife to Enable Informed Decision Making
Congratulations on your pregnancy! This exciting time is filled with anticipation, joy, and maybe a sprinkle of nervousness. As a doula, lactation counselor, and childbirth educator, I see firsthand the power of information in creating a positive and empowered pregnancy journey. One key element? Open communication with your OBGYN or Midwife.
Prenatal appointments are your chance to voice your questions and concerns, and your OBGYN is there to guide you. Here are some key questions to ask throughout your pregnancy, categorized by trimester, to ensure you feel informed and in control of your choices:
First Trimester:
Prenatal Care: How often will I need prenatal checkups? What tests and screenings are recommended for me?
Diet and Exercise: What dietary changes should I make? Is exercise safe, and if so, what kind is best?
Medications: Are any of my current medications safe to continue taking during pregnancy?
Morning Sickness: What are some strategies to manage nausea and vomiting?
Second Trimester:
Fetal Development: How is my baby developing? What are some milestones to look for?
Movement: When can I expect to feel my baby move?
Genetic Screening: Do you recommend any additional genetic testing?
Delivery Options: What are my options for delivery (vaginal birth, cesarean section)?
Pain Management: What pain management options are available during labor?
Third Trimester:
Labor Signs: What are the signs and symptoms of labor? When should I call you?
Birth Plan: Can we discuss my birth plan preferences?
Induction: What are the reasons for induction, and under what circumstances would you recommend it?
Postpartum Care: What can I expect after birth in terms of recovery and newborn care?
Breastfeeding: Do you have any resources to help me prepare for breastfeeding?
Beyond the Trimester Basics:
Personal Concerns: Don't hesitate to ask questions about any specific worries you have, from emotional well-being to body changes.
Second Opinions: If you're unsure about a recommendation, is it okay to seek a second opinion?
Remember: There are no bad questions! The more informed you are, the more confident you'll feel making decisions about your care and your baby's birth.
Bonus Tip: Prepare a list of questions beforehand and bring it with you to your appointments. This will ensure you don't forget anything important in the flurry of emotions and information.
By asking questions and engaging in open communication with your OBGYN, you can navigate pregnancy and birth feeling empowered and in control. Remember, you are the captain of this incredible journey!
